A black comedy is a comic work that makes light of serious, disturbing, or taboo subject matter." Black comedy was earlier called "gallows humor." This type of comedy is often controversial because of its subject matter.
A Satire. . .
is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices especially in the areas of politics and topical issues.
Dark Comedy film comments on society's hang-ups and phobias; these are often social and political commentaries. The comments could be in the form of a play, a novel, literature, or film.
Dr. Strangelove
Stanley Kubrick's 1964 "Dr. Strangelove" is one of the best-known mainstream examples of dark comedy. The subject of the film is the cold war or nuclear war and the possibility of annihilation of life on Earth. This very serious subject is made into a comedy. Peter Sellers is a mild-mannered US president, Merkin M Muffley, and the creepy ex-Nazi scientist, Dr. Strangelove. He plays three different characters! (The Doctor, The President, and Private Muffley)
"Dr. Strangelove"
This is the End
"This is the End" (2013) takes a dark comedy approach to the period of time after the annihilation of humanity. The film follows a group of actors (all playing versions of themselves) as they encounter demons, monsters, and psychotic cannibals after the "rapture" talked about in the bible. This movie was a success commercially and with critics.
FARGO
"Fargo" is a 1996 dark comedy that takes place in the snow country. Frances McDermott plays a pregnant police chief whose has to take care of a murder. In real life, she is married to one of the Cohen brothers who wrote and directed the movie.
Peter Stormare and Steve Buscemi in "Fargo"
Frances McDermott in "Fargo"
The Cohen brothers are well known for their awesome dark comedy films. I have seen most of them including, "O' Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Cloony and John Torturro. One of my favorites! A story of three escaped convicts and their encounters on their escape trail. Filled with twists and turns, there is never a dull moment! Great blue grass music too!
"Bad Santa"
is a 2003 film about a drunken, foul-mouthed professional thief who doubles as a department store Santa. Billy Bob Thornton stars in this movie. A great movie with a sequel coming out this coming out this year. After all these years, Bad Santa II with Billy Bob Thornton returning as Bad Santa!
War of the Roses
"War of the Roses" is a 1989 film starring Michael Douglas and Cathleen Turner. It is about a married couple who are rich and hate each other. It funny and quite brutal the way they fight! You will find yourself on the edge of your seat wondering who is going to win the fight!
Birdman
"Birdman" is a 2014 character driven film by Alejandro G. Inarritu. Michael Keaton plays an actor who can't get over the influence of his superhero role and wants to regain his acting reputation as a serious actor. This movie captures the egotistical nature of Hollywood actors; how they will go to any lengths to make things appear real. This was a critically acclaimed film and won the Academy Ward for "Best Picture."
The Cable Guy
"HELLO! The cable guy is here" - Remember this one? "The Cable Guy" (1996) was directed by Ben Stiller and starred Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey is the maladjusted, lonely cable man who torments Matthew Broderick. This is a satire on TV and cable and gives an example of someone who was raised by the TV. Jim Carry is the psychotic, obsessive product of our society. I really like this movie! But it might be too frightening for some people. Carrey pushes the envelope with this character! So think about it before you share it - lol!
The critics did not like this new character Carrey was playing and criticized the film heavily. Despite this, it was a huge box office success! Grossing $102 million worldwide.
Heathers
This is an American Black comedy (released March 31, 1989) written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Zehman. It stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Sharon Doherty. The film portrays four teenage girls - three of whom are named "Heather" who are all in a clique at an Ohio High School. It is a social commentary about high school. This cult film has received many awards even though it was not a box office hit. In 2017 work has begun on a new television production of "Heathers."
TRAINSPOTTING
This movie is about heroin addiction in Scotland. July 14, 2016 was the 20th anniversary for this film. Ewan McGregor became famous after this movie. There is now a "Trainspotting II." The same actors came together for this film after 20 years! Be sure and add these to your movie watching list!
There are many more great dark comedies and I hope this introduction to them will encourage you to be brave and watch some of them! Warning though -- watch these alone before you introduce to your girlfriend, mom, or best friend. Some of these may be too intense for some viewers! I can see a PDF file coming on dark comedy! Too many to cover! Nelda

The period between 1943 and 1950 in the history of Italian cinema is dominated by the realistic atmosphere of neorealism, which is defined as a period of time of Italian post-war film . It had great impact on Film Noir and French New Wave Cinema. This Golden Age of Italian cinema influenced film directors all over the world.
The Bicycle Thief" directed by Vittorio De Sica (1948)
One of the most recognized films of this era is "The Bicycle Thief." The film follows a man (Lamberto Maggiorani) wandering the streets to find his stolen bicycle. Attempting to steal another bicycle he is caught and labeled as a thief himself. This film captures post-war Italy and the daily desperation they were facing. It is interesting to note that Maggiorani was a factory worker before getting the role. All the scenes were shot on location, grounding the film in realism.
Roberto Rossellini directed "Stromboli" starring Ingrid Bergman. (1950)
Federico Fellini directed "The Nights of Cabiria" (1957)
Neorealism became famous globally in 1946 with "Rome, Open City." Directed by Robert Rossellini, this movie was filmed during the time period directly following the Nazi occupation of this region of Italy (1945.) Rossellini shot mostly outdoors amidst the war aftermath. The war was still going on in the rest of Italy! This movie was filmed using actual left-over tanks, soldiers, extras from the streets. . . It is all real! This gives the viewer an eerie feeling. Rossellini captured it. . .the post war surreal reality that people found themselves in. Definitely a movie to add to your viewing list!
The screenplay of Rome Open City was written by Sergio Amidel with the help of Federico Fellini in his kitchen. Shooting started on January 18, 1945. They had to use abandoned film scraps found here and there. Rossellini, little by little, sold all he owned so the film could go on.
Audiences reacted with enthusiasm and it became the first hit of the year. It was the beginning of "neorealism" --an opening onto reality, onto the human predicament.
Roberto Rossellini
The neorealistic movement created a new audience for stories of lower-class struggles. But the movement fell apart in the early 1950s, as Italy began to show signs of recovery and there was a demand for more positive films.
Here is a list of movies from this time period:
1. Ossessione (Luchino Visconti, 1942)
2. Open City (Roberto Rossellini, 1945)
3. Shoeshine (Vittorio De Sica, 1946)
4. Passion (Roberto Rossellini, 1946)
5. Germany Year Zero (Roberto Rossellini, 1948)
6. Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio De Sica, 1948)
7. The Earth Trembles (Luchino Visconti, 1948)
8. Bitter Rice (Giuseppe De Santis, 1952)
9. Stromboli ( Roberto Rossellini, 1950)
10. Bellissima (Luchino Visconti, 1951)
11. Miracle in Milan (Vittorio De Sica, 1951)
12. Rome 11:00 (Giuseppe De Santis, 1952)
13. Europe '51 (Roberto Rossellini, 1952)
14. Umberto D. (Vittorio De Sica, 1952) many historians date the end of the neorealist movement with the public attacks on this film.
15. Journey to Italy (Robert Rossellini, 1954)
16. Nights of Cairia (Federico Fellini, 1957)
This "Golden Age" of film making was created out of need and struggle, nearly impossible circumstances. Maybe that is why it is so special and inspires filmmakers of today to study it with reverence.

The
term "film noir" (film n'war), literally black and white film, was
coined by French film critics (first by Nino Frank in 1946) who noticed
the trend of how dark and down beat the looks and themes were of many
American films released in France following the war.
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
These two were madly in love in real life and Bogart divorced his wife and married Bacall. They stayed married for 10 years until his death (Jan 14, 1957.) They starred in several great films together. I have seen all of these and I recommend you taking the time to watch them on your next movie night!
"To Have and Have Not" (1944) they met on this set
"The Big Sleep" (1946) considered one of the greatest "film noir"
"Dark Passage" (1947)
"Key Largo" (1948)
Photos below are Fred MacMurrey and Barbara Stanwick
"Double Indemnity" (photo above) is another one of the most famous "film noir"movies, starring Fred MacMurrey, Barbara Stanwick and Edward G. Robinson. An insurance investigator falls for a woman who talks him into a fraud scheme involving murder. Barbara Stanwick is the "film noir femme fatale" in this one.
Classic film noir developed during and after World War II, taking advantage of the post-war atmosphere of anxiety, pessimism and suspicion. It was a style of black and white American films that first evolved in the 1940s and lasted until about 1960 (marked by the last film of the era, Orson Wells' "Touch of Evil" 1958.)
Usually murder in addition to greed and jealousy are elements of "film noir." Before the term "film noir" was widely accepted in the 1970s, many of these classic films were referred to as "melodramas."
Kirk Douglas
"Out of the Past" is one of my favorite "film noir" films starring Kirk Douglas and Robert Mitchum along with Jane Greer.
Robert Mitchum (Jeff) a private eye, escapes his past and runs a gas station in a small town, but his past catches up with him. Now, he is pulled back into a dangerous world by a crime boss, Kirk Douglas (Whit) and a double-crossing dame Jane Greer (Kathie.) Jane Greer is playing a stellar role as a "film noir femme fatale." THOSE LITTLE PEOPLE. . . Trolls, Leprechauns, Gnomes (part 1)
TROLLS
A troll is a being in Norse mythology and from Scandinavian folklore. They dwelled in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves and lived in small groups or families. Their looks and characteristics differed depending on what region they were from.
Here is a little tale of the trolls...
There was a time when waters were clean and forests were untouched. When the ancients spoke of "guardians of the earth" in Scandinavian lands. These mysterious creatures were called "trolls." These solitary beings were told to be kidnappers and man-eaters. Numerous tales of trolls picture them much like a small man such as a dwarf. Mischievous creatures with bad associations were old and scary looking!
Trolls were known to guard the earth's natural resources by burying precious metals and minerals underground. (silver, gold, brass, copper, bronze, gemstones) The presence of trolls usually indicates gold and gemstones are buried nearby! Which is why trolls are often associated with good fortune.
We know that after a rain shower rainbows appear. The trolls guarding the buried treasure have long hair with shimmering lights the colors of the rainbow. Trolls who guard the "pot of gold" can be identified by their rainbow colored hair.
Trolls live in families. Other troll families are the "forest trolls" who have green hair and "sea trolls" who have blue hair. The older and wiser trolls have gray or white streaks in their hair.
The best place to find a troll would be a patch of berries. But, trolls move so quickly they can only be caught if you "grab them by the hair." Once caught, a troll will grant you a wish. Because of this trolls are said to bring good luck when you rub their hair.
Because they are rarely seen some people believe trolls no longer exist today. These nearly forgotten creatures are once again in our midst. Find one. Grab it by its hair. Make a wish! Quickly! before the sunlight comes up and turns them to stone!
